It’s so easy to pick a side and follow it without actually giving it any real thought. One day you just decide, this is the actor I love, this is the ideology I believe in, this is the community I follow, and so on.
But why?
Maybe you genuinely liked something about that person. Or maybe someone around you followed a certain ideology, so you joined them too.
As you go on with your life, continuing this process of following your idols or beliefs, those beliefs only get stronger, especially if you never truly thought for yourself.
You open social media and follow your idols and the people who support them. You hang out with people who share the same beliefs, which convinces you even more that you’re right.
You’re in an echo chamber now. Slowly, you lose the ability to question things, to challenge your own thoughts, to look at anything without bias. Every day, your feed shows you content that matches your beliefs, you like it, share it, and pull down the feed just to see more of the same.
Congrats, you’ve completely lost it.
You’re no longer exposed to anything beyond your belief system. You’re part of a group with just one agenda.
If you can relate to this, you still have time.
Question yourself. Make the questions tough. Go beyond your own beliefs. If you don’t question, you never learn. Stop living in denial of the world that exists outside your echo chambers.
It doesn’t mean you’re always wrong or that questioning will overturn everything you’ve believed. But you will realise that the world isn’t black and white.
Be brave enough to question yourself and brave enough to be proven wrong.
